A 7.3 magnitude (prelimintary) earthquake has occured off the coast of Japan Thursday (Dec 6). The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reports that no destructive widespread tsunami is forecast. However earthquakes of this size could generate a tsunami for the Japanese coastline. Areas of Japan are under either a tsunami warning or advisory near the epicenter.

No destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data. However – earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter. The Japan Meteorological Agency has cancelled the tsunami advisory for Japan.
