An east swell from distant Hurricane Jimena will build surf along east facing shores through the weekend. East facing shores are currently seeing high surf from Hurricane Ignacio.

With significant rainfall and thunderstorms expected from Hurricane Ignacio, the Hawaiian Electric Companies have activated our emergency response plans and have been making preparations to quickly respond to customer outages and other potential impacts to our systems.

National Weather Service (NWS) reported this morning that Ignacio maintained its Category 1 strength overnight and is expected to strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane sometime today. Forecasts show Ignacio weakening back to Category 1 status as it approaches, and impacts to the state could be felt as early as Sunday evening.

The Hawaii Red Cross has been working throughout the week calling down hundreds of volunteers in preparation for Hurricane Ignacio and Tropical Storm Jimena. The Red Cross is watching the situation closely and working with local and state officials, ready to respond as needed.
