Residents are being allowed to return home in all areas except Ka’u and Hamakua, where storm conditions are continuing. Shelters will remain open in Laupahoehoe, Honka’a, Ka’u and Pahoa. Rolling blackouts will occur due to two power plants being offline in the wake of the storm.

Hurricane Iselle will run over the Big Island with effects starting Thursday afternoon (Aug 7). Winds of 75 mph are currently being recorded. Heavy rainfall along with storm surge will flood areas with rising waters.

Hurricane Iselle is not weakening and may remain a hurricane as it nears or passes over the Big Island. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the Big Island, residents should take precautions due to powerful winds, rain and ocean surge.

Hurricane Iselle’s maximum sustained winds are near 100 mph, 155 km/h, with higher gusts. Iselle is forecast to see weakening during the next 48 hours with some increase in forward speed as it approaches Hawaii.
