Mauna Kea hunting areas restricted for DLNR animal control project

The next animal control dates are September 13 and 14, 2017. Public access to Mauna Kea Forest Reserve, Mauna Kea Ice Age Natural Area Reserve, Palila Mitigation Lands, the Ka‘ohe Game Management Area and Mauna Kea Hunter Access Road will be restricted and allowed BY PERMIT ONLY for animal salvage purposes.

DLNR to conduct feral ram and goat hunt at Puuwaawaa

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife will conduct an ungulate control program at Puu Waawaa Mauka (above Mamalahoa Highway), during three consecutive weekends in September: Labor Day weekend Sept. 2-4, Sept. 9 and 10, and Sept. 16 and 17. During these dates hiking will not be permitted.

A new quarterly newsletter for hunters has been launched this month by the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW). “Go Hunt Hawai‘i,” is designed to help improve communication between the hunting community, other interested parties and resource managers.

DLNR creates new website for Hunter Education Program

Since 1979, more than 68,000 students have received their certifications through the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Hunter Education Program. Annually, more than 2,000 students register and attend Hunter Education classes across the state. This experience is now about to get just a little easier for the public.

Hunting at PTA closed through May due to military training

Hunting will be closed, here, through the end of May due to military training. Army officials anticipate resuming hunting June 4, pending training area availability. The Army typically opens PTA for hunting most weekends; however, hunting opportunities here are subject to service members’ training needs and schedules, which take priority.

Army officials are opening several training areas for bow hunting, here, April 9-10. Humu’ula Unit (training areas 1-4) and Menehune Unit (training areas 5-6) will be open for bow hunting of pigs, goats and sheep only, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
