No destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data. However – earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter. Although no reported widespread tsunami threat exists from the 6.7 magnitude earthquake in Japan Wednesday (June 22) a tsunami near the epicenter could occur. The tsunami Advisory issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency for Iwate Prefecture in Japan has been cancelled as of 7:45 a.m. JST June 23, 2011.
