On Friday, November 5, 2012, at approximately 11:20 a.m., police officers responded to Moku Ola (Coconut Island) for a reported spear fisherman in distress. Upon arrival, along with Fire Department Rescue personnel, a 77 year-old man had already been removed from the ocean and was unresponsive.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 10:51 a.m. alarm Thursday (March 24) for a boat in distress 400 yards off-shore Moku Ola (Coconut Island) in Hilo Bay. A 12-foot aluminum boat had capsized and its two passengers were clinging to its hull in windy, choppy ocean conditions.
