Governor Neil Abercrombie today ordered that all national and Hawai'i flags at all State offices and agencies as well as the Hawai'i National Guard are to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Monday, August 15, 2011 in memory of former Hawai'i County Mayor Herbert Matayoshi.

The revised preliminary Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) for Hawai‘i County will be released by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and available for public comment during open houses on August 9 and 10.

Results of the Kona and Puna Flood Studies are not included in the preliminary digital flood insurance rate maps for Hawai‘i County.

Most County of Hawai`i offices that serve the public will be closed on Friday, July 29, which will be the first county employee furlough day of the new fiscal year. Starting in August, the county furlough days will be scheduled on the first Friday of each month.
 
In an effort to minimize any inconvenience to the public, county officials are asking residents to include the furlough schedule in their planning to ensure the county agencies they need will be open when they arrive.

County of Hawai`i Mayor Billy Kenoi today announced a new two-year agreement with the Hawai`i Government Employees Association that continues a limited county furlough program to save an estimated $2.1 million per year.

The agreement calls for HGEA members to accept furloughs of one day per month for the two-year period that began July 1, 2011. That equates to a pay reduction of 4.615 percent from pay levels in effect before furloughs first took effect last year.

The Regents Candidate Advisory Council (RCAC) has presented a list of candidates to Gov. Neil Abercrombie to fill a Hawai‘i County seat on the UH Board of Regents. Gov. Abercrombie must select his nominee for the Board of Regents from this list, and the appointment must be confirmed by the state Senate during the next legislative session.

Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi and Mayor Sadaji Akutsu of Shibukawa, Japan, reaffirmed a sister-city relationship between Shibukawa and the County of Hawaii in a ceremony in Hilo on Jan. 14, 2011.

The sister-city relationship was established in 1997 to promote friendship and good will between the peoples of Ikaho-Machi and the County of Hawaii.
