The County of Hawai‘i Department of Parks and Recreation announces that on Thursday, Aug. 16, it will reopen the recently constructed upper parking lot at Hilo’s Gilbert Carvalho Park. Located mauka of the park’s baseball field, the new lot provides nearly an acre of safe, off-street parking for the public’s use.

According to the mayor the $365 million FY 2012-2013 budget is $37,911,650 or 9.4 percent less than the budget in effect when the administration took office in 2008.

To better prepare county employees for responding to emergencies, the County of Hawai’i will be conducting an emergency evacuation drill at the West Hawai’i Civic Center. This drill will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 14 and is expected to last about 30 minutes.

Hawaii County Civil Defense Administrator Quince Mento has announced his retirement effective tomorrow (Dec. 1). In his place, John T. Drummond, an administrative officer at Civil Defense, will serve as interim administrator.

The Hawai’i County Motor Vehicle Registration office advises residents that the recently mailed December 2011 vehicle registration renewal notice contains an incorrect total due amount. The renewal notices, mailed on November 18, did not include the current increase in State of Hawai’i weight tax and registration fee because of a statewide computer programming error.

County staff from the Building Department will explain and clarify proposed changes to the Hawai`i County Building Code at two workshops next month. Bill 270, Draft 3, would change the Building Code by adopting the 2006 International Building Code (2006 IBC), along with a number of state and county amendments.
