The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Hawaiian Islands from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon (Aug 8).

Abundant moisture from the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Howard and an upper trough moving near the islands will bring a conducive environment for heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Hawaii Island remains under a flood watch due to heavy rains

The National Weather Service Flash Flood Watch for Hawaii Island remains in effect. Due to unstable weather conditions and very moist air across the state, the flash flood watch will remain in effect through 6 p.m. tonight.

At 1:36 p.m. weather radar showed heavy rain straddling the Daniel K. Inouye Highway near Pohakuloa. Rain rates in this area were in the 1-2 inches per hour range. Widespread moderate to heavy rain continues to fall over Puna, south Hilo and north Hilo districts with rates of about 1 inch per hour.
