The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flash flood watch for Hawaii Island from Friday evening (Sept 25) through Monday (Sept 28).

A surge of deep tropical moisture north of Tropical Storm Niala will approach Hawaii Island by tonight and remain in place through the weekend.

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect through 6 p.m. for Hawaii Island, Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Kahoolawe Monday (Sept 21).

Periods of heavy rain and saturated soil from recent rains will increase the risk of flash flooding.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding.

Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 11) in Ka‘u is closed between the 58 and 59 mile markers due to flooding across the roadway making it impassible. There is no projection as to when the roadway will open due to heavy rains.

Flash flood warning, watch and marine advisories for Hawaii

At 5:18 p.m. weather radar showed heavy rain seven miles southeast of h]Hawi, or about 39 miles north of Kailua-Kona. Civil Defense reported Kohala Mountain Road was closed due to water covering the road at mile marker nine and a half. The area of heavy rain was nearly stationary.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood watch for Hawaii Island until 8:18 a.m. Saturday (Aug 22).

At 5 a.m. weather radar showed heavy rain over North Hilo, South Hilo, Puna and East Ka‘u districts. The area of heavy rain was nearly stationary. Other locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Pepeekeo Papaikou, Paauilo, Ookala, Laupahoehoe, Honomu and Hakalau.
