Firefighters responded to a 2:19 p.m. alarm Monday (July 4) to Old Puako Beach Road for a brushfire across from the area known as Beach 69.

Crews used two fire engines a tanker unit, medic unit and nine firefighers in total to work the fire. Firefighers were able to get the fire under control by 2:43 p.m. and it was declared out at 3:50 p.m.

Do not use metal ladders or poles near power lines. Keep any ladders, poles or tie lines  that are used to set up fireworks at least 10 feet away from power lines. Overhead  power lines are energized and could be dangerous.

The heavy use of fireworks during the annual holiday celebration can significantly increase the amount of particulates in the air, especially on Oahu.

County of Hawai‘i fire officials are urging residents to use more than the usual amount of caution when setting off fireworks to celebrate the New Year.

With drier than normal weather and drought conditions in parts of the island, residents should use extreme care in setting off fireworks and, if possible, avoid setting off fireworks in drought-stricken areas.
