Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument

State recruiting 3-4 volunteers for six–month Kure Atoll project

The State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife is seeking three to four volunteers for the summer field season on Kure Atoll (mid-February – September 2012). Kure Atoll is a part of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM) and is located 1400 miles northwest of O’ahu.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) invites the public to help the Division of Forestry and Wildlife take part in a national Big Trees competition. The Big Trees Program, run by American Forests, is a national competition to find the largest trees of particular species in the nation.

The DFW, DLNR will conduct animal control activities, specifically aerial shooting from helicopters, within Palila Critical Habitat in the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve (Unit A) and Kaohe Game Management Area (Unit G) on the island of Hawaii for feral goats, feral sheep, mouflon and mouflon/feral sheep hybrids November 22-23, and November 29-30, 2011.
