Hilo woman is arrested in connection with stabbing death Monday (Jan 7)

Hawaiʻi Island police have arrested a 37-year-old Hilo woman in connection with a stabbing Monday morning (January 7) in Hilo. At 7:17 p.m. Monday, detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section arrested Cherie Sueko Moskwa on suspicion of second-degree murder.

Police identify body of man found at remote Ka‘u beach

Big Island police have identified a body found November 3 at Waikini Beach in Kaʻū as 48-year-old Terry Lee Day, who lived in the Ocean View area but had no permanent address. Day was identified Tuesday afternoon (November 13) through dental records.

An autopsy has determined that  49-year-old Barry Bokmej of Kawaihae died from cardiac arrest.

On June 4, Bokmej was found unresponsive on a roof he had been pressure-washing.

He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Big Island police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a female caller who made a 9-1-1 call on May 3 to report a deceased person at a home in Volcano.

The caller made the report but her identification was not obtained.

Responding officers discovered the body of 52-year-old Patrick Barrionuebo at his home on Paʻaliʻi Street.

The case is classified as a coroner’s inquest. Autopsy results are still pending.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 1:39 p.m. alarm Saturday (May 5) when a passerby spotted the body of a man floating in Onomea Bay North of Hilo.

The fire department's helicopter airlifted the body, which was about 200 yards off shore, to the Onomea Bay lookout. Police said it was a 43 year-old Papaikou man who was reportedly picking Opihi in Onomea.

Big Island police have initiated a coroner’s inquest case in connection with the death of a canoe paddler. 

Kona Patrol officers responded to the Keauhou Pier at approximately 7 a.m. Wednesday (February 1) after receiving a report of an overturned double hull canoe. 

When officers arrived, Coast Guard personnel were already on scene. All 10 paddlers from the canoe were back on shore by 7:45 a.m.

Preliminary results from an autopsy performed on Friday (November 11) gave no indication that foul play was involved in the death of a man whose body was found on Banyan Drive in Hilo on November 8. 

The autopsy performed on the body of 50-year-old Ronald Moku Kahapea of Hilo was inconclusive on the exact cause of death. The cause and manner of death are pending results of toxicology tests.

The preliminary pathological results from an autopsy performed on the 57 year-old Hilo man indicate that foul play was not involved.

The medical examiner who performed the examination said that Roy Lemon died as a result of “blunt force injury” and the injury appeared consistent with a fall.

Detectives are awaiting the findings of a toxicology analysis.

At about 6:57 p.m. on January 2, South Hilo patrol officers responded to Hilo Medical Center to a report of an unresponsive infant who had been transported there by an adult.

Hawai'i Police Department detectives have identified one potential witness captured on a surveillance video but are still seeking the occupants of a vehicle who may be witnesses to events surrounding the death of 5-year-old Javieanne Win.

In reviewing surveillance videos, detectives observed a small sports-utility vehicle turning right from Shipman Street onto Kamehameha Avenue. Detectives believe the occupants of the SUV may have seen little Javieanne Win near the building on the Hāmākua side of Shipman Street. Detectives believe the SUV is a Toyota RAV 4 with surf racks. It appears to be red or maroon.
