Vice officers from the Hawaiʻi Police Department are asking for the public’s help in providing information about cockfighting. Cockfighting involves attaching razor-sharp gaffs to the legs of roosters, which then are left to fight one or more opponents until all but one are either dead or so savagely wounded they cannot continue.

Big Island police broke up two cockfights in Puna on Sunday (April 17). The first was at a home on 38th Avenue in the Orchidland Estates subdivision. A crowd of more than 100 persons dispersed when Vice officers arrived on the scene, which included a makeshift arena behind the property’s main structure.

On Thursday, July 1, 2010, Area I Vice Officers executed a Search Warrant at a Kalopa residence in the Hamakua District which resulted in the arrests of four individuals in conjunction with cockfighting activity. The warrant was served at approximately 8:15 p.m., after Vice Officers received information of possible cockfighting being held at the residence.
