An earthquake which occurred at approximately 11:38 a.m. HST Monday (April 24) off the coast of Central Chile but it was not large enough to cause a tsunami for the state of Hawai’i. Preliminary data indicates that the earthquake measured 6.7 magnitude.

Based upon available data the Central Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says a major tsunami is NOT expected to strike Hawaii. However sea level changes and strong currents may occur that could be hazardous to swimmers, boaters and along coastal areas. As of 7:33 a.m. Thursday (Sept 17) the tsunami advisory has been cancelled.

A 6.7 magnitude earthquake has occurred near the coast of Northern Chile. No destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data. Ocean level readings indicate a tsunami of less than one foot was created in the area.
