Having Kanani Numata at bat in the sixth inning proved key to the University of Hawaii at Hilo softball team in opening the Mizuno/Tournament of Champions with wins over NCAA Division II West Region teams in Turlock, Calif. In a 2-1 victory over Humboldt State University, Numata’s sixth-inning single tied the game. She then delivered a sixth-inning two-run double to give the Vulcans a 2-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Vulcans improved to 25-10.
