Fire crews continued the battle into the night against two brushfires along Hawaii 11 in Pahala. High winds complicated the effort in the afternoon, although officials said the winds died down after sunset.

More than one dozen patients - plus staff members - at Ka‘u Hospital and students at a volleyball camp reportedly have been evacuated. They are being sheltered at Naalehu Community Center.

Firefighters responded to a 4:13 p.m. alarm Monday (Feb 13) to a brushfire North of the Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kuakini Highway intersection in Kailua-Kona.

A power line fell, made contact with the ground and sparked the brushfire. The fire burned about one acre of undeveloped land. Kuakini Highway was closed between Keakealani Drive and the Kona Outdoor Circle during firefighting operations. Traffic was snarled on the Queen Kaahumanu Highway due to the road closure.

Firefighters have been battling an out of control brushfire near the 45 mile marker of Saddle Road Tuesday (Oct 4). Police have closed Saddle Road on the West side at the Mamalahoa Highway junction (Hwy 190) and on the East side at the eight mile marker of Saddle Road. Hawaii County Civil Defense reports that the road will probably be closed through tomorrow (Oct 5).

Big Island police are asking for the public's help in providing information about three suspicious brushfires in the Punaluʻu area of Kaʻū in the span of a week.

The August 3, August 7 and August 8 fires were located along Highway 11 in the area of the 55- and 56-mile markers and appear to have been set intentionally.

Fire crews answered a 12:14 p.m. alarm Thursday (July 28) to Honokaa-Waipio Road for a brushfire between the four and five mile markers on the makai side of the road.

The roadway was blocked while firefighters and chopper one battled the fast moving brushfire fanned by trade winds pushing the fire towards the highway. The two acres of farmland burning grew to five acres by the time the fire was out at 4 p.m.

As of 6 p.m. Hawaii County Civil Defense reports that Waikoloa Road is now open in both directions. The road was closed earlier due to a brushfire along the south side of Waikoloa road.
