Big Island Dairy discharges wastewater in Kaohaoha Gulch near ‘Ō‘ōkala Town

The Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) is warning the public to stay out of Kaohaoha Gulch below Mamalahoa Highway in ‘Ō‘ōkala, Hawai‘i. Storm water within Kaohaoha Gulch was contaminated with animal waste due to discharge this morning from a lagoon at the Big Island Dairy facility.

Health Dept fines Big Island Dairy for pollution violations

The Hawaii State Department of Health (DOH) has issued a Notice of Violation and Order to Big Island Dairy, LLC for the unlawful discharge of wastewater from the dairy’s Concentrated Animal Feedlot Operations (CAFO), located in O’okala on Hawaii Island, to Kaohaoha Gulch.
