The girls state volleyball tournament kicks off this week with two Big Island schools seeded fourth. Big Island Interscholastic Federation champions Kamehameha-Hawaii and Hawaii Preparatory Academy have each been awarded 4th seeds. The Division I tournament runs Wednesday through Saturday on Maui. Hawai‘i Hilo junior middle blocker Hillary-Lucy Hurley (Anderson, Calif./Enterprise) has been named the Pacific West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week.

The honor was announced by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix, Ariz., on Monday, Oct. 11, for matches played Oct. 4-10.

The second time around is usually a little more difficult but in their second match with Dominican University in back-to-back nights the University of Hawaii at Hilo took just an hour and 21 minutes to dispatch the Penguins 3-0 in a Pacific West Conference match in San Rafael, Calif.

“They were better prepared for us tonight so we weren’t able to play everybody as much,” said UHH head coach Tino Reyes.
