USDA designates Hawaii County as a primary natural disaster area

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated Hawaii County in Hawaii as a primary natural disaster area due damages and losses caused by wind, rain and flooding that occurred August 7-9, 2014. “Our hearts go out to those Hawaii farmers and ranchers affected by recent natural disasters,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

Big Island police are investigating the theft of livestock over the weekend in Honokaʻa.

Sometime between July 13 and 14 someone entered a livestock paddock in the Kapulena area and butchered a calf valued at more than $400. The property had been set aside by the county for lease to farmers and ranchers.

The County of Hawai`i is inviting farmers, ranchers and other interested applicants to bid on long-term leases for 718 acres of county-owned lands at Pa`auilo.

The 16 parcels of land range from less than 13 acres to nearly 110 acres, and are available for 10-year leases. The minimum rental price will be $11.63 per acre per year, which is based on an outside market appraisal of the land.
