Flash Flood Warning for the Big Island has been cancelled. Police report traffic is still being detoured over the old section of Saddle Road through Waikii as water and debris have closed the Western portion of the Daniel K. Inouye Highway.

UPDATED (12/31/2013 at 9:41 p.m.)

Hawaii Police Department advises motorists to AVOID the New Saddle Rd., also known as the Daniel K. Inouye Highway, 41 mile marker to Highway 190 junction due to flooding and debris on the roadway.

A flooding incident on New Saddle Rd. (aka. Daniel K. Innouye Hwy.) between the 41 mile marker and Highway 190 junction has closed Saddle Rd. and will require a detour of traffic onto the Old Saddle Rd. through Waikii area overnight.

Old Saddle Rd., through Waikii, is currently open. Please use Old Saddle Rd., Highway 19 or Highway 11 (Mamalahoa Highway) as alternate routes.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flash Flood Warning for the Big Island until 9:30 p.m. Tuesday (Dec 31).

At 6:18 p.m. weather radar showed heavy rain near Honokaa. The area of heavy rain was nearly stationary. Other locations in the warning area include, but are not limited to, Waipio Valley.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action. Runoff from this storm may also cause rock and mudslides in steep terrain.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
