Quake intensity slightly less Thursday (May 3) but Puna residents warned to prepare and stay vigilant

Lava has erupted out of a crack in the Leilani Estates subdivision of Puna. More info here.

Evacuations out of Leilani Estates is underway, access to the area is limited.

This is a Civil Defense Road Closure Message for 11:43 a.m., Thursday, May 3, 2018. The Department of Public Works reports the section of Pahoa-Pohoiki Road between Highway 132 (Kapoho Road) and Leilani Ave. is now open in both directions. A metal plate is now in place covering the damaged pavement.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports the situation continues with a slight drop in intensity since yesterday. Low magnitude earthquake activity continues along the east rift zone in lower Puna which includes Leilani Estates, Nanawale Estates, to the coastal area of Kapoho.

Due to this activity, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory indicates an eruption is possible but not imminent. Because it is not possible to predict where an eruption could occur, the areas that could be affected are the regions surrounding Nanawale Estates, Leilani Estates or Kapoho.
