The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a Winter Storm Warning for Hawaii Island summits through 6 a.m. Sunday (Dec 11).

Summits above 12,000 feet are forecast to receive an additional 2-4 inches of snow adding to what was already deposited Saturday. There is heavy snowfall, snow drifts, winds and poor visibility making traveling on the summits for motorists or hikers very dangerous.

Winds are coming from the southwest at 15-30 mph with gusts to 45 mph. Temperatures will be in the uppers 20s to lower 30s. Visibility will be below 1/4 mile at times.

Mauna Kea summit access road is closed above the Visitor Information Station.
