Fire/rescue crews answered a 1:50 p.m. alarm Thursday (Oct 20) to the forest reserve off Kaalaiki Road northeast of Naalehu for a missing hiker.
Crews met with the person who called for help alerting rescuers to the last known location of the missing hiker. Crews performed a ground search and used Chopper One for an aerial search in the area. A dense forest canopy along with steep terrain including gullys containing rivers and waterfalls made search conditions difficult. Crews searched until dark without finding the hiker.
The search will resume in the morning at 6 a.m. at daybreak.
