Furlough inmate misses check-in at Hale Nani

Hawaiʻi Island police are searching for a 34-year-old Puna man who was reported as an escapee from the Hale Nani correctional facility.

Shawn Travis Kaawa was last seen at the correctional facility on September 15 at about 2 p.m.

He is described as a “local male,” 5-foot-4, 180 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. He has a tribal-style sleeve tattoo on his left forearm, a tattoo of the word “HAWAII” on the back of his left hand, the letters “K-A-U” across the fingers of his left hand, and other assorted tattoos on his legs, back and right arm.

Police ask anyone with information on his whereabouts to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the island wide Crime Stoppers number at 961-8300. Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.

HILO – Extended furlough inmate Shawn Kaawa failed to report to the Hale Nani Reintegration Center for his scheduled check-in last night. State Sheriffs and Hawaii Police were notified.

Inmates in the extended furlough program live and work outside of the facility but must check in at various times throughout the month.

Kaawa is serving time for Prohibited Acts Related to Drug Paraphernalia. Escape 2 is expected to be added to his charges. He was scheduled for a parole hearing today (September 29).

34-year old Kaawa is classified as community custody which is the lowest custody level. He is 5’4” tall and weighs 165 lbs. He has brown hair and brown eyes.

Anyone who sees him is urged to call 911.
