Ulika rapidly intensifies to a hurricane

At 11 p.m. HST Tuesday (Sep 27), the center of Hurricane Ulika was located about 1,135 miles (1,830 km) east southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. Ulika is moving toward the north-northeast near 7 mph (11 km/h). A turn toward the north is expected later today, followed by a turn toward the northwest on Thursday.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts. Some additional strengthening is possible today. However, weakening is forecast to begin tonight, and Ulika is expected to become a tropical storm again on Thursday.

Ulika is a tiny hurricane. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 10 miles (20 km) from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km).

The estimated minimum central pressure is 992 mb (29.30 inches).

There are currently no hazards forecast for Hawaii.
