Man falls while rappelling down waterfall Sunday (Sept 25)

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 11:03 a.m. alarm Sunday (Sept 25) to an upper waterfall of Makahiloa Stream on the Hilo side of Maulua Gulch for a climbing accident.

A 21-year-old man was rappelling down a 135 foot waterfall and fell the last 25 feet. The man sustained a leg injury in the fall. Due to the steep valley wall and dense jungle rescue crews used Chopper One to airlift the man via a longline attached to a litter. The victim was then taken via an ambulance to Hilo Medical Center in stable condition.

Kikaha Homestead Road was closed by police during the rescue operation.

The man was able to contact others in his group who were able to safely get out of the scene of the accident.
