Fatal car crash closes Mamalahoa Hwy in Glenwood overnight

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 10:34 p.m. alarm Friday (Aug 26) to the intersection of Mamalahoa Highway (Route 11) and N. Glenwood Road for a single car crash.

Crews arrived to find a mid-sized sedan with extensive front-end damage which was pushed into the passenger compartment from the crash. A male driver was found pinned in the car dead.

The car, which had been headed to Hilo on Mamalahoa Highway, scattered debris across the highway after the crash forcing the closure of the roadway in both directions to clear the area and for the police investigation due to the fatality.

Police were able to open one lane to traffic about 1:50 a.m. early Saturday morning and reported the roadway fully open about 5 a.m.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
