Tropical Storm Darby passes Hawaii Island, county facilities reopen today

7 p.m. Sunday (July 24) Hawaii County Civil Defense Tropical Storm Darby audio update

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center continues the Tropical Storm Warning for Oahu and Kauai, storm warnings for Hawaii and Maui County have been cancelled. Residents of Oahu and Kauai should visit the CPHC website and your island’s local media for more info.

As of 5 p.m. HST Sunday (July 24) the center of Darby was located about 40 miles (60 km) ease-southeast of Lihue Kauai moving northwest at 12 mph (19 km/h). Maximum sustained winds are 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 80 miles (130 km) from the center.

The Flash Flood Watch for Hawaii County has been cancelled.

A Brown Water Advisory has also been issued for Hawaii County due to heavy rains. The public is advised to stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff due to possible contamination. If the water is brown, stay out.

Darby is forecast to continue moving northwest and is expected to pass over or near Kauai tonight.

The Hele-On Bus resumes its regularly scheduled service on Sunday (July 24) beginning with the 3:15 a.m. Hilo to Waikoloa bus.

Solid waste transfer stations and landfills will be open as normally scheduled today.

County parks and recreational facilities, including the Pana’ewa Zoo and Hilo Municipal Golf Course, are open today. The County Lava Viewing program will resume Monday, however, please exercise caution since work crews and heavy equipment may be in the area. The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park reports lava viewing is open from within the National Park.

DLNR reports a small vessel has run aground and sunk near the Old Airport Park in Kailua-Kona.

Umauma Bridge on Highway 19 has reopened.

The remaining emergency shelters closed at 8 a.m. this morning.

HELCO crews have been working to restore power in Puna and Kohala. Most of Puna has been restored with a few areas of outage being worked on. Kohala has been restored. If anyone has power problems contact HELCO at 808-969-6666.
