Seven people saved in ocean rescue off Hakalau Monday (July 18)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 5:01 alarm Monday (July 18) to Hakalau Beach Park for seven swimmers swept into the ocean in a flash flood of Hakalau Stream.

Crews were unable to locate victims from shore. The Fire Department Chopper One was able to locate the victims in deep water and deployed two rescue swimmers. The victims and crew were airlifted back to shore. Nobody required medical attention.

The National Weather Service had issued a flood advisory for parts of the Hamakua Coast due to heavy rains from what was Tropical Cyclone Celia.
