Vandalism at Kapoho cemetery damages gravesites


Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in identifying whoever was responsible for causing damage to numerous grave monuments and concrete vase holders at the Kapoho Zairyumin Kai Japanese Cemetery on Kapoho Lighthouse Road.

On April 21, a cemetery caretaker discovered that the monuments and concrete vase holders had been tampered with or damaged. The damage occurred sometime between April 10 and April 21.

The preliminary damage estimate is approximately $4,200.

Police ask anyone with any information about this case to call Officer Roberto Segobia at 965-2716 or the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the islandwide Crime Stoppers number at 961-8300 and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
