Former Konawaena Wildcat Galdeira is drafted into the WNBA

PULLMAN, Wash. – Former Washington State women’s basketball guard Lia Galdeira became the first player in Cougar history drafted to the Women’s National Basketball Association, Thursday, selected by the Washington Mystics as the No. 19 overall pick in the second round of the 2016 WNBA Draft Presented by State Farm.

A standout guard for the Cougars from 2012-15, Galdeira appeared in 96 games for the Cougars. The Kamuela, Hawaii native ranks second on WSU’s all-time scoring history with 1,710 career points. She also sits second in career 3-pointers with 160, second in career steals (271), and fourth in career made free throws (308). Galdeira scored in double figures 88 times over her collegiate career and recorded 34 career 20-point games.

Galdeira accumulated seven All-Pac-12 awards during her time on the Palouse, including two All-Pac-12 selections and an All-Pac-12 Defensive Team selection. Galdeira elected to forgo her senior season and play internationally for professional Bulgarian basketball club, Haskovo 2012, before declaring for this year’s draft.

Added note: Galdeira joined at WSU after graduating from Konawaena high school. Galdeira helped lead her high school team to three Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I girls basketball titles.
