Police are investigating a shooting near Honolii Beach Park in Hilo early Sunday morning (Jan 31), one person was at Hilo Medical Center for treatment of a shooting.
Neighbors near Honolii said they heard 5-6 gunshots about 4:25 a.m. and about three minutes later heard an older car screech up Kahoa Street to Mamalahoa Highway. Police said they had numerous reports of the gunfire.
Police closed Kahoa Street, fronting Honolii Beach Park to vehicle and foot traffic as they investigate the shooting scene. An officer on scene said the roadway may open sometime mid-afternoon. A number of cars and trucks with surfboards on board were turned away from the popular surf spot.
Police also took a car into custody in Piihonua at the intersection of Piikea Street and Waianuenue Avenue that was seen with what looked like bullet holes and a broken window on the driver’s side of the car. A resident there said he heard a lot of yelling early in the morning after 4 a.m.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating an early morning shooting in Hilo that left a man hospitalized.
At about 4:35 a.m. Sunday (January 31), police responded to several reports of gunshots in the Honoliʻi lookout area. Responding officers observed evidence of a shooting and closed off Kahoa Road to await detectives and crime scene specialists to process the scene.
At around the same time, patrol officers at Hilo Medical Center on an unrelated call were informed by hospital staff that a shooting victim had arrived at the emergency room. They learned that a 31-year-old Kona man had been taken to the hospital by a private vehicle following the shooting at the lookout.
The victim underwent surgery and was later transferred to an Oahu hospital in guarded condition for further treatment.
Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section are continuing the investigation, which is classified as a second-degree attempted murder.
