Fire/rescue crews responded to a 1:50 p.m. alarm Saturday (Jan 23) to Kilauea Iki Crater in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for an injured hiker.

A 54 year-old woman was hiking with her daughter across the floor of Kilauea Iki Crater then wandered about 50 feet off the trail. The woman lost her balance on some rocks, flipped backwards onto her head and back. The woman received multiple cuts and abrasions to her arms and legs.

National Park Rangers treated the injured woman in the crater until she could be airlifted out by the fire department’s Chopper One to a waiting ambulance. She was taken to Hilo Medical Center in stable condition.
