Hawaiʻi Island police are renewing their request for information on the whereabouts of a 33-year-old Puna man wanted on outstanding warrants and for other investigations.

Ronald Joseph Kong of Mountain View is described as 5-foot-9, about 190 pounds with brown hair and eyes. He is known to frequent the Puna District.

He is also a suspect in additional cases that came to light following the execution of search warrants on a stolen vehicle and a backpack that were recovered following a traffic stop. On January 12, at about 3:30 pm, detectives found a late-model Toyota pickup truck traveling south on Route 11 in Mountain View after receiving information that Kong may be operating the truck. The truck was stopped in the area of Kukui Camp Road and the driver, identified as Kong, fled on foot into thick vegetation. Police conducted extensive checks in the surrounding areas but Kong was able to elude police and remains at large.

The passenger in the stolen vehicle, a 31-year-old woman, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree hindering prosecution. After conferring with prosecutors, she was released without charges.

The stolen vehicle was recovered as evidence.

Kong is wanted on suspicion of abuse of a family household member, second-degree assault, first-degree unlawful imprisonment, and first-degree terroristic threatening cases in which he allegedly assaulted and threatened a 31-year-old female companion in a dispute that occurred in Puna on January 4.

He is considered extremely dangerous and may be armed. Police are urging the public not to approach or contact Kong and instead, to immediately notify police if they see him or know his whereabouts. The public is asked to contact either Detective Royce Serrao at 961-2272 or royce.serrao@hawaiicounty.gov, or Detective Wendall Carter at 961-2378 or wendall.carter@hawaiicounty.gov.
