Fire/rescue crews along with the Coast Guard responded to a 2:41 p.m. alarm Sunday (Oct 25) to the Champagne Ponds/Kapoho Bay area of Puna for a missing freediver.
The woman has been identified as 33-year-old Amber Savant of Kona. Savant was spearfishing with a partner when they were caught in a rip current carrying them out during their first dive of the day at about 2:30 p.m. The two swam for shore but Savant was carried out by currents.
Savant has blonde hair, 5-feet 7-inches tall, 140 pounds and was last seen wearing camouflage pants, a black tank top, dive weights and carrying a spear gun. She was last seen about 150 yards offshore near the outer reef break.
The fire department used Chopper One, a jet ski, freedivers and ground crews to search the shoreline, inner and outer reefs and deeper waters until nightfall. The Coast Guard are using an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and HC-130 Hercules aircraft to search throughout the night. The 87-foot patrol boat Kittiwake will join the search at first light Monday (Oct 26) along with fire department crews.
The area was experiencing 5 mph winds and 5-foot seas during rescue operations.
Anyone with information about the missing woman should contact the Coast Guard at (808) 842-2600.
