11:10 a.m. Hawaii County Civil Defense message on Hurricane Olaf and High Surf
As of 5 p.m. HST Wednesday (Oct 21) Hurricane Olaf was about 800 miles (1,285 km) southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. Maximum sustained winds have weakened slightly to about 120 mph (195 km/h) with higher gusts. Olaf is moving northwest at 9 mph (15 km/h).
Olaf is still a major Category Three hurricane.
Hurricane force winds extend 35 miles (55 km) from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 160 miles (260 km).
Currently there are no watches or warnings for Hawaii for Hurricane Olaf but large swells generated by Hurricane Olaf will build along east facing shores of Hawaii Island over the next couple of days.
A high surf warning and small craft advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service.
