The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for Hawaii Island until 11:30 p.m. tonight (Sept 25).

At 8:35 p.m. weather radar indicated moderate rainfall over the windward side of Hawaii Island which may produce localized flooding and ponding of water on roadways. Rain is expected to continue for the next several hours.

Locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Kapaau, Honokaa, Honomu, Keaau, Naalehu and Eden Roc.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action. Excessive runoff may cause rockslides and mudslides in steep terrain.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.

If heavy rains continue this advisory may be extended beyond 11:30 p.m.
