The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flash flood watch for Hawaii Island from Friday evening (Sept 25) through Monday (Sept 28).

A surge of deep tropical moisture north of Tropical Storm Niala will approach Hawaii Island by tonight and remain in place through the weekend. Heavy showers and thunderstorms will favor east through south slopes but may reach any part of the island. Individual showers may be relatively brief but extreme accumulation will be possible anyway if showers train over a given location.

Overall coverage of the island should start relatively small tonight but expand significantly on Saturday and Saturday night. The threat of heavy rain will diminish as the very moist air mass moves away to the west next week.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action. Excessive runoff may cause rockslides and mudslides in steep terrain.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
