Firefighters have tough time putting out Kona house fire

Firefighters responded to a 9:12 p.m. alarm Friday (Sept 11) to a structure fire at the end of Hookele Street in Kona.

Crews arrived to find a half of a two-story, multi-family wood framed home engulfed in flames with the roof partially collapsed.

Firefighters had a difficult time putting out the blaze due to a one lane concrete driveway limiting access and no fire hydrants near the home. Crews shuttled water to the fire scene using five fire engines from Keauhou, Kailua-Kona, Makalei and South Kohala stations. Crews had the fire under control by 2 a.m. Saturday (Sept 12) and out at 5 a.m.

The approximately 4,500 square-foot home sustained an estimated $350,000 worth of damage with $150,000 saved. There were no injuries reported as all residents got out of the home. The Red Cross was at the scene to attend to the displaced residents.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
