Hawaii County Civil Defense 1:30 p.m. weather and surf message

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory for Hawaii Island through 4:15 p.m. this afternoon. Due to unstable and moist air conditions heavy rain and thunder showers can be expected for parts of the island. Motorists are advised to drive with caution and to be prepared for hazardous conditions to include ponding and run off and to anticipate traffic delays.

The High Surf Warning for the east facing shores of Hawaii Island remains in effect and has been extended through 6:00PM tomorrow. Dangerous surf conditions continue to be observed and reported across areas of East Hawaii. Surf heights of 12-18 feet are forecast for the east facing shores of Hawaii Island. Residents along the coast and in low lying areas are advised to take necessary precautions. Beachgoers swimmers and surfers are advised to exercise caution and to heed all advice given by Ocean Safety Officials. Due to debris and ongoing dangerous surf conditions the following beach parks and facilities in East Hawaii will remain closed.

• Leleiwi Beach Park
• Kealoha Beach Park
• Richardsons Beach Park
• Ahalanui Beach Park
• Laupahoehoe Boat ramp

Presently, the Bayfront Highway in Hilo is open to one lane of traffic however State Highway crews are clearing debris and may be reopening the highway to all traffic if conditions are safe to allow traffic flow. Additional updates will be posted and broadcast as conditions change.
