Flash flood warning, watch and marine advisories for Hawaii

At 5:18 p.m. weather radar showed heavy rain seven miles southeast of h]Hawi, or about 39 miles north of Kailua-Kona. Civil Defense reported Kohala Mountain Road was closed due to water covering the road at mile marker nine and a half. The area of heavy rain was nearly stationary.

As of 5 p.m. Sunday (Aug 23) Tropical Depression Kilo was located about 715 miles (1,150 km) southwest of Honolulu. The system is moving farther away from the main Hawaiian Islands.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood watch for Hawaii Island until 8:18 a.m. Saturday (Aug 22).

At 5 a.m. weather radar showed heavy rain over North Hilo, South Hilo, Puna and East Ka‘u districts. The area of heavy rain was nearly stationary. Other locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Pepeekeo Papaikou, Paauilo, Ookala, Laupahoehoe, Honomu and Hakalau.

Firefighters responded to a 6:16 a.m. alarm Thursday (Aug 20) to 16-2143 Azure Drive in Puna for a structure fire.

Crews arrived to find smoke billowing out of the rafters of a vacant home with fire in a carport laundry room. East Fern Forest Volunteer firefighters were able to put out the fire which was declared out at 6:58 a.m.

In early 1918, visitors swarmed to Kīlauea Volcano to see a splendid show. The molten lake in Halema‘uma‘u had been rising and the pit was almost full. Soon lava spilled over the crater rim onto the floor of Kīlauea’s summit.

At approximately 1:48 p.m. Puna Patrol officers and State of Hawai’i Sheriff’s attempted to serve a bench warrant at a residence on Mauna Lani Tract Road when a vehicle sped towards the officers in a threatening manner. In response, a police officer fired three shots and a deputy sheriff fired two shots towards the vehicle, striking the operator. The vehicle subsequently struck another deputy sheriff before coming to rest after running into bushes on the property.
