The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf warning for east facing shores of Hawaii Island until 6 p.m. Tuesday (Sept 1).

Surf along east facing shores is forecast to be in the 12-20 foot range today through Tuesday.

Coastal areas can expect ocean water surging and sweeping across beaches, coastal areas creating the potential for impacts to coastal properties, infrastructure and roadways. There will be strong breaking waves, shore breaks and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous. Entering the water will be very hazardous and people could face significant injury or death.

Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed the advice given by ocean safety officials and be careful. Know your limits and when in doubt, don’t go out.

Boaters should expect recreational surfers and bodyboarders using harbor channels to access surfing areas. Large breaking waves and strong currents may impact harbor entrances and channels causing challenging boat handling.
