5:10 p.m. HST Saturday (Aug 29) Hawaii County Civil Defense message on Hurricane Ignacio
As of 11 p.m. HST Saturday (Aug 29) the center of Hurricane Ignacio was located about 495 miles (800 km) east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. Maximum sustained winds are about 145 mph (230 km/hr) with higher gusts moving northwest at 8 mph (13 km/hr). Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (45 km) from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km) from the center.
A tropical storm watch has been issued for Hawaii Island and Maui County, tropical storm conditions are possible for Hawaii Island starting Sunday night (Aug 30). Rainfall in the amounts of two to four inches with isolated maximum amounts near six inches in higher elevation areas are possible on Hawaii Island.
Ignacio is a Category Four hurricane and may strengthen further today. A gradual weakening is forecast for Sunday and Monday. The outer winds of Ignacio could affect Hawaii Island by early Monday (Aug 31).
Large swells generated by Ignacio will arrive along the east and southeast facing shores of Hawaii Island over the next several days. This large surf is potentially life-threatening and will arrive this weekend and early next week.
