5:05 p.m. HST Friday (Aug 28) Hawaii County Civil Defense message on Hurricane Ignacio
As of 11 p.m. HST Friday (Aug 28) the center of Hurricane Ignacio was located about 660 miles (1,060 km) east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. Maximum sustained winds are about 90 mph (150 km/hr) with higher gusts moving west-northwest at 9 mph (15 km/hr). Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (45 km) from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 80 miles (130 km) from the center.
Ignacio is a category one hurricane and may strength further over the next day or so followed by weakening which is expected to begin Sunday.
Surf from Ignacio will begin to build along east facing shores of Hawaii Island this weekend and may be come very large and dangerous by late Sunday (Aug 30).
