Fire damages Hawaiian Beaches home in Puna Monday

Firefighters responded to a 6:26 p.m. alarm Monday evening to 15-2685 Kumu Street in the Hawaiian Beach subdivision of Puna.

Crews arrived to find a single story, unoccupied home with smoke coming from the rafters and flames in the walls. Firefighters had to force their way through the locked and fenced property line and open a boarded up doorway.

Firefighters found a bathroom and part of an adjoining bedroom on fire with smoke damage through much of the interior. Crews had the fire out at 6:46 p.m. and was able to use fans to ventilate the smoke out.

The home appeared to be vacant with the doors boarded up with only the two windows in the front part of the home open.

Firefighters were able to limit the loss to $15,000 in the fire with $163,000 saved. The home appeared to be undergoing remodeling.

There were no injuries reported and no roadblocks during firefighting operations. The cause of the blaze is undetermined.
