Fatal crash closes Mamalahoa Highway in Hilo

Police have identified the man killed in the crash.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 4:10 a.m. alarm Saturday (Aug 15) to Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 19) about 500 feet south of Old Onomea Road for a head on crash between a car and box truck.

Rescue crews arrived to find both drivers pinned in their vehicles. The car’s driver was dead at the scene, crews used the ‘jaws of life’ to get the truck’s male driver out. The truck driver was treated and taken by medics to Hilo Medical Center.

Mamalahoa Highway was closed during the rescue and investigation and was reported to be open as of 9 a.m.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by police.
