Pair rescued from base of waterfalls at Piihonua Bridge in Hilo

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 2:10 p.m. alarm Thursday (July 23) to Piihonua Bridge to rescue two injured people in a pond at the base of a waterfall.

Crews found a male and female below the falls at the edge of the whitewater who could not get out due to their injuries. The pair were injured in the rapidly moving water by the falls.

Rescue divers were dropped into the pond who then got the patients into a billy pugh rescue net to be airlifted to a medic unit. Both patients were taken to Hilo Medical Center in stable condition.

Piihonua bridge was closed during the rescue operation. The police are investigating the incident.
