MEDIA RELEASE

The County of Hawai’i is partnering with a community group to improve Downtown Hilo’s Kaipalaoa Landing Park, a historic site and favorite surf spot near the intersection of Waianuenue and Kamehameha Avenues.

The project will repair damaged rock walls and restore eroded areas, repair grass and a walkway, and install new showers and picnic tables.

Malama Kaipalaoa has been caring for the landing since 2009. The half-acre park was transferred from the state to the County in 2013.

Planning and design for the project was done pro bono by a group of local design professionals. The $349,000 in improvements will be completed this December.
