Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a suspected burglary and arson at a Puna business that resulted in approximately $20,000 in property damage.

Puna Patrol Officers responded to a 2:15 a.m. call Thursday (May 21) reporting a structure fire at Verna’s Drive-In just off Highway 11 in the Mountain View area. Arriving officers found the front door open and a small fire burning inside.

Results of the HI-PAL “Click It or Ticket” basketball tournament

More than 250 youths from 29 teams participated in the HI-PAL “Click It or Ticket” elementary and intermediate basketball leagues, which ran from February through April with games at Andrews Gym, Carvalho Park and Pāpaʻikou Gym. Waiākea Titans Gold and Keaʻau Green both finished the intermediate league with unblemished 8-0 records.

During the week of May 11, 2015, through May 17, 2015, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there have been 372 DUI arrests compared with 485 during the same period last year, a decrease of 23.3 percent.

Average retail gasoline prices in Hawaii have risen 2.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.25/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 355 gas outlets in Hawaii. This compares with the national average that has increased 5.0 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.71/g, says gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Kīlauea Volcano's summit lava lake continued to drop today (May 15, 2015). Measurements of the lake surface late Friday afternoon (May 15) showed that it was 62 m (203 ft) below the top of the newly-created vent rim, a ridge (or levee) of solidified lava about 8 m (26 ft) thick that accumulated on top of the Halemaʻumaʻu Crater floor from multiple overflows of the vent during the past two weeks.
